There is some confusion in the UK market regarding the suitability of using water mist and water sprays extinguishers on live electrical equipment.

Some service companies are guided by the wording in the BSI 5306-8 service and maintenance standard which states ‘only non-conductive extinguishing media, such as non-conductive powder, carbon dioxide, or other clean agent, should be specified for use on live electrical equipment’

We at Jewel do not agree with this statement and in November 2023 along with other extinguisher manufacturers and major distributors signed the product statement which is available to see here

Our water mist extinguishers contain de-ionized water. The removal of the electrical ions combined with the delivery of the water in millions of tiny droplets ensures that there is no conductivity as the extinguisher is used.

Some of the common beliefs about using the extinguishers on electrical equipment include:

1. ‘The tiny droplets can gather in a pool of water and then run back in a straight line to the operator’s feet’

In a real fire scenario as soon as the droplets hit the flame they turn to steam. No pool of water is formed.

2. ‘De-ionized water returns to its natural conductive form once it leaves the extinguisher and mixes with impurities in the air during a fire.

Accepting that de-ionized water is not conductive due to the removal of all ions and passing an electrical conductivity test in a laboratory also proves it does not change when passed through air, then we can be equally confident that nothing will change in the seconds that you might use an extinguisher to put out a fire.

3. ‘There are doubts about how long de-ionized water retains its properties in an extinguisher with Polythene lining.’

Polythene, like most plastics, has a high electrical resistivity, meaning it resists the movement of electric charge. This is because the electrons in its molecules are tightly bound and not free to move and carry a current.

Jewel has supplied thousands of water mist and water spray extinguishers, and we have real life case studies where they have been used successfully on fires involving live electrical equipment.
