Water Mist v Water Spray

When we talk about the micron size of a water droplet we are basically speaking about how small or large each droplet is and how heavy they can be.

An explanation of the differences in water droplets can be seen below:

A key point in fighting fires is to consider how close the micron size of the droplet of water is to a particle of smoke. Most fatalities in fire situations are caused by smoke inhalation and the toxic fumes as people try to escape rather than getting burnt.

Jewel’s E-Series water mist uses propriety supersonic nozzle technology to produce a micron size of between 25 and 50 for each droplet of water. Millions of these tiny droplets are created and as they are close to the micron size of a smoke particle they can clear smoke very rapidly.

The difference between mist and spray is important and has consequences. The nozzle technology for water sprays is less advanced and so the droplet size can be up to 10 times or greater than true water mist.

This leads to a difference in performance in the areas below:

Fire Risk to Cover

Jewels E-Series water mist can extinguish most classes of fire. Classes A, B, C, E, F

Most water sprays are usually tested for Class A only (and do not have either Class B or Class F ratings). The spray nozzle will also cover the conductivity risk if it has been tested and approved to BSEN3-7 .

Smoke Scrubbing

The micron size of the E-Series water mist will clear smoke more quickly and effectively because it is closer to the micron size of a smoke particle.

The spray micron size means the water droplet will be heavier and less effective at clearing smoke.

Scarcity of Water

This article has been posted in August 2025 in the middle of a drought here in Yorkshire.

There is a hosepipe ban after one of the driest springs for many years. In this age of Global warming, it’s important for us all to try to conserve water.

Watch the video below to see a car fire which is quite a common occurrence on our roads and motorways. Usually, the fire authorities will poor gallons of water on these types of fires but in this video, you can see that we extinguished the fire under supervision using just 5 litres of water from just one of our 61 E-Series water mist extinguishers.
